SELF CARE TIPS FOR CRAPPY DAYS

Everyone has crappy days once in awhile. You know those days where you just can’t? Work seems like extra effort, getting out of bed is the hardest thing you’ve ever done and you just want to grunt at people cause words are too hard? You know what I’m talking about. They’re a part of life, we’ve all been there. Most of the time we just push through and keep going about the motions but I think its important to take the time out to focus on you and have a little self care time. Do something for you to boost your spirits and turn that crappy day into a good one. Instead of just pushing through and running yourself down – mentally and physically – takes some time to focus on yourself, on making you feel good again. Here are some of the things I like to do to boost my spirits when I’m feeling low.

EXERCISE

Sometimes after a bad day sweating it out is the way to go. I always feel so good after a workout (thank you endorphins) and sometimes just getting away from everything and not thinking for an hour or so while you work up a sweat is just the thing you need. I know I always feel amazing after a good workout session or even going for a walk around my neighbourhood without my headphones on and some upbeat music playing. It also has the added benefit of keeping you fit and healthy so thats a bonus!

SOAK IN THE TUB

Sometimes there is nothing more relaxing then a nice hot soak in the tub. Candles, music and a bath bomb or two, this might just be what you need to pick your spirits up again. So slip away from your troubles for awhile and turn the lights of, light the candles, mute your phone, get your bath bombs ready and get naked and wet. (Sounds dirty huh?)

GET A MASSAGE

This is one of my absolute favourite things to do. Once upon a time I had a weekly appointment to get a massage but I have less time to do that these days. I still do try to get one as often as possible though. Stress is actually a big cause in muscle tension which causes discomfort and brings down our mood so a massage is a great way to get yourself feeling perky again. I love the relaxing music, the low light, and of course the massage itself. But you always walk out feeling relaxed and rejuvenated afterwards. And pretty sleepy. So pick up the phone and book yourself in.

MEDITATE

I thought meditating was for hippies once upon a time. Not gonna lie. And then when I was having trouble with anxiety I started doing it every morning. I would burn my favourite incense, put on my favourite relaxing music and meditate before I started my day. It was so soothing and relaxing and it really centred me which was just what I needed at that time in my life. Whenever I find myself stressed or just needed a moment for myself I’ll find a quiet spot, close my eyes and just let it go.

GO OUTSIDE

Sometimes just being outside in nature makes you feel good. Feeling the breeze on your face, the warm sun on your skin, there’s just something rejuvenating about it. If you’re having a bad day instead of staying cooped up inside, go out! Take a book and a blanket and sit on the grass and read. Lay in the shade and relax with your iPod. Take your dog for a walk¬†around your neighbourhood or find a hiking trail to conquer. Just be outside in the world and enjoy it.

PAMPER TIME

Give yourself a facial, do your nails or get someone to do them for you. Go get a massage or hell, do all of them. I have a physically and mentally draining job and by the time Friday comes around I’m exhausted from a long week at work. So I come home and I do a full body pamper – hair, skin, body, nails; everything. I go all out and I love it. It makes me feel relaxed, calm and most of all, human after a long work week. It’s also a good way to start your weekend refreshed and revitalised. Taking a little time out to pamper yourself is a must.

WATCH A MOVIE

I personally recommend a Disney movie because they make everyone smile. Having a bad day or just in a funk? Throw on a Disney movie and watch your favourite heroes and heroines sing and dance their troubles away. Pick out your favourite cult classic – Pulp Fiction, Clueless, Almost Famous – or pull out a comedy classic. Adam Sandler Marathon anyone? The options are endless. My favourite go to films are the Harry Potter series. No way I don’t feel happy after watching one of those. What’s your go to happy movie?

COLOUR-IN

Guys, colouring in is cool again! I remember loving nothing more than colouring in as a kid and these days colouring in for stress has become a popular thing. There are so many different, cool and sometimes naughty colouring in books available from bookstores or department stores. I recently bought my best friend one filled with swear words and insults surrounded by flowers and cute animals. She loves it. Feeling stressed? Whip out your pencils or markers (whatever your preference) shut of your brain for awhile and start colouring.

UNPLUG

Put down the electronic device! Step away from the remote! Do something that doesn’t involve any kind of electronics. What you ask? Well – anything! Read a book, bake a cake, do something creative – paint, write, draw. Play that musical instrument you haven’t played in a while or reorganise that cupboard you’ve been planning to go through. Remember what it was like to entertain yourself before everything was online? People had actual conversations that didn’t involve a keyboard and filled their days with activities that didn’t involve a screen.

WRITE

Sometimes putting into words how you’re feeling can be surprisingly therapeutic. Taking all those thoughts and feelings and putting them into words can sometimes even help you figure out how you’re feeling – finally putting into words the feelings and emotions we sometimes don’t have a name for. Grab a pen and a note book and just write. It doesn’t have to be a cohesive. It can be words, sentences. Random thoughts. Just get out and onto the page.

Taking care of yourself when you’re feeling crappy is important. Even if its for ten minutes, an hour or a day. Chill out, take some you time to make yourself feel good again. Try doing this at least once a week and you’ll feel the difference – and you’ll have something to look forward too as well.

What do you do to take a moment for yourself when life’s got you feeling shitty? xx
